Alexandra Urban (Popescu)Dr. Urban joined the Department of Neurology Epilepsy Division in 2009 after completing a neurology residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2008 and a clinical neurophysiology/EEG fellowship at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. in 2009. She is board certified in neurology, clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy.

Dr. Urban has a special interest in caring for patients with epilepsy and in evaluating patients for possible epilepsy surgery. She is involved in intraoperative electrocorticography recording, brain mapping, and directs the weekly multidisciplinary epilepsy surgery conference. She coordinates the UPMC Responsive Neuro Stimulation (RNS) Clinic for epilepsy. RNS is the first device to provide responsive neurostimulation, automatically monitoring brain signals and providing stimulation to abnormal electrical events to stop seizures. Dr Urban discusses the RNS system in an August 1, 2015 artticle in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.

Dr. Urban has attending responsibilities in the UPMC Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, sees patients in the epilepsy clinic and directs the EEG laboratory. She is part of the continuous EEG service, monitoring for seizures in ICU comatose patients. She teaches and lectures medical students, neurology residents and directs the clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy fellowship programs at UPMC.
