Center for Clinical Neurophysiology

The Center for Clinical Neurophysiology (CCN) at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) was organized in 1981 as an interdepartmental (Neurosurgery, Neurology, Anesthesiology, Psychiatry, and Pediatrics) resource integrated with all UPMC-affiliated health care institutions. Among the services provided under the umbrella of the CCN are diagnostic testing through a number of member and associated laboratories, intraoperative monitoring at hospitals throughout the tri-state region, and continuous intensive care unit monitoring at these hospitals' ICUs.

The CCN supports a full armamentarium of diagnostic tests, such as all modalities of evoked potentials, motor potentials, computerized EEG acquisition, electromyographic studies, transcranial doppler evaluations, xenon blood flow studies, and neuro-otologic studies. The CCN has the expertise to provide all types of intraoperative monitoring, including evoked potentials, motor potentials, direct nerve recording, and computerized spectral brain wave analysis.

The CCN actively supports programs within the Department of Neurological Surgery and the UPMC as a whole, including the Center for Cranial Base Surgery, the Epilepsy Center, the Cerebrovascular Surgery Section, the Peripheral Injury Center, the Neurofibromatosis Center, the Brain Trauma Center, and the Center for Cranial Nerve Disorders and Microvascular Surgery. The CCN also supports programs in Orthopedic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Otolaryngology.
