Biography
Arlan H. Mintz, MD, MSc, joined the faculty of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh in May of 2005.
Dr. Mintz completed his undergraduate education at the University of Toronto with a bachelor’s of science specialist degree in neurosciences. He continued at the University of Toronto to complete a master of science degree in neurophysiology the findings of which were published in Science. Dr. Mintz then completed his medical degree at McMaster University in 1990 and his neurosurgery residency at the University of Ottawa in 1997. During his residency, Dr. Mintz returned to McMaster University to complete a master of science in clinical epidemiology and clinical trial design. His Master’s thesis examined the role of surgery and radiosurgery in the treatment of brain metastasis.
After completion of his residency, Dr. Mintz held the position of clinical assistant professor in neurosurgery at McMaster University from 1997-2001. During his tenure there he was the chair of the Neuro-Oncology Disease Site Group at Hamilton Regional Cancer Center. He then joined the staff of the Trillium Hospital in Toronto where he directed the neuro-oncology clinic and developed the Awake Craniotomy Program.
Dr. Mintz was an active member of the Neuro-Oncology Practice Guideline Committee for Cancer Care Ontario where he was the lead author on the Brain Metastasis and Gliadel Wafer Practice Guidelines.
Dr. Mintz is the past chair of the Ontario Medical Association’s Section of Neurosurgery and a former board member of the Specialist Coalition of Ontario. He was the lead author on the largest randomized controlled trial examining the role of surgery and radiation in the treatment of brain metastasis.
Since joining the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh Dr. Mintz has assumed the role of the program director of the training program for the Minimally Invasive endoNeurosurgery Center (MINC) and established an international fellowship program.
Dr. Mintz is an instructor in the endoscopic and skull base course, has co-authored many articles on endoscopic brain surgery and has been an invited lecturer at several international meetings.
