Biography
Harold B. Weiss, MPH, PhD, joined the faculty of the Department of Neurological Surgery and the Center for Injury Research and Control (CIRCL) in November 1998. He has more than 25 years experience in the practice of injury control, including consultation on local projects, working at the state level in Wisconsin, where he directed the injury prevention program from 1985-1989, and, since 1992, in academia. He served as director of the CIRCL from November 2002 to February 2008.
Dr. Weiss did his undergraduate work at the University of California and received masters degrees in environmental health and epidemiology from the University of Minnesota and his doctorate in epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.
His 37 publications and numerous presentations have spanned the gamut of injury control topics. In 1998, he published the Child and Adolescent Emergency Department Visit Databook. In addition to his dissertation research on fetal injuries, his current work focuses on trauma and pregnancy.
He also continues to work with the Pennsylvania Health Department to fully utilize and analyze the injury data in the statewide hospital discharge data system and is authoring or co-authoring publications from these data in the areas of assaults, falls, fire and burns, women’s injuries, head and spinal cord injuries and bicycle injuries.
