Biography

Hiroko Yano, PhD joined the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh in October of 2010 as an assistant professor.

Dr. Yano received her PhD degree from the University of Tokyo, Japan. She obtained her postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Moses Chao, PhD, at New York University and studied the role of neurotrophins in nervous system development as well as synaptic transmission. She then worked in the laboratory of Robert Friedlander, MD, at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston as instructor and focused on the molecular mechanisms of Huntington’s disease pathogenesis using cell and animal models.

Through National Institute of Health (NIH) and National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) grants, Dr. Yano is currently investigating the role of epigenetic alterations and mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases.
