ATN is a pain syndrome with characteristics of typical TN as well as characteristics of other facial pain syndromes. Over 1000 patients with ATN have been treated at UPMC. Immediate complete relief was seen in 48% while 43% obtained immediate partial relief.

While recurrence rates are higher than with microvascular decompression for typical TN, it is important to remember that these patients are not helped by alternative therapies.
