Brain and Spine Tumor Links of Interest

The following is a list of websites dealing with brain and spine cancer tumors, research and education.

American Brain Tumor Association
ABTA funds brain tumor research and provides information to help patients make educated decisions about their health care. The ABTA offers printed materials about research and treatment of brain tumors, and provides listings of physicians, treatment facilities, and support groups throughout the country. A limited selection of Spanish-language publications is available.

American Cancer Society
Overview including information on prevention and risk factors; detection and symptoms; types of treatment; frequently asked questions; news about cancer; and links to additional online resources.

The Brain Tumor Society
The Brain Tumor Society provides information about brain tumors and related conditions for patients and their families. They offer a patient/family telephone network, educational publications, funding for research projects, and access to support groups for patients.

ClinicalTrials.gov
Clinical trials are conducted when there is no proven treatment for a specific disease, or to test which treatment works best for a particular disease or condition. This is a comprehensive listing of trials.

Family Caregiver Alliance
This consumer-oriented web site provides basic information about brain tumors including definitions, statistics, symptoms, diagnosis, forms of treatment and a recommended reading list.

Hillman Cancer Brain Tumor Clinical Trials
The Hillman Cancer Center is the flagship treatment and research facility of the UPMC Cancer Center.  This link will take you to the current clinical trials involving brain tumors run through the Hillman Cancer Center and the Brain Tumor Program.

MedlinePlus
Consumer health information resource provided by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). Pages include general information, links to pictures/diagrams, diagnosis, symptoms, prevention and screenings.

National Brain Tumor Foundation (NBTF)
NBTF provides patients and families with information on coping with brain tumors. This organization conducts national and regional conferences, publishes printed materials for patients and family members, provides access to a national network of patient support groups, and assists in answering patient inquiries. NBTF also awards grants to fund research. Staff are available to answer calls in Spanish, and some Spanish-language publications are available.

National Cancer Institute
Full text of publication authored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Includes information about screening, early detection, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of tumors as well as numerous links to more detailed information.

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)
Discussion of symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of brain and spinal cord tumors, with particular attention to the research being done in this area.

OncoLink
Includes general information about brain tumors as well as frequently asked questions, screening and diagnosis information, treatment, genetics and support information.

National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center committed to characterizng new lifesaving approaches for cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment.

The Whole Brain Atlas
Point, Inc. called this Harvard Medical School web site "the best visual representation of what's inside your head." Includes images of five different brain tumors as well as comparisons to brains without disease.
