UPMC Named to Honor Roll in 'Best Hospitals' List

Pittsburgh, July 7, 2006 --The University Pittsburgh Medical Center has been named to the honor roll list in U.S. News & World Report magazine's latest 'America's Best Hospitals' survey. The medical center ranked 14th out of 5,189 eligible hospitals across the country.

For inclusion on the honor roll, a hospital had to "demonstrate exceptional breadth of excellence in six or more specialty areas." The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center was recognized in 13 of the magazine’s 16 specialty care categories including ‘neurology/neurosurgery’ where the medical center ranked 19th in the nation.

Criteria used in the survey, according to the magazine, included "reputation, mortality, and a mix of care-related factors such as nursing and patient services."

The rankings appear in the July 17 issue of the magazine, on newsstands Monday, July 10.
