Walter, Trauma Patient Featured on WTAE-TV News

Pittsburgh, May 17, 2006 -- Kevin Walter, MD, was featured on the WTAE-TV (Pittsburgh) Evening News, May 17, discussing the benefits of treating brain trauma patients with hypothermia as soon as possible after accidents.

The news report discussed the recovery of a 34-year-old female who was involved in a major automobile accident in March of 2004 suffering severe head trauma. Trauma surgeons cooled the patient's brain and body with ice water, slowing her metabolic rate and easing her brain's bleeding, swelling and inflammation.

The patient spent two days in the cooled state and two weeks in critical care. Following rehabilitation she has enjoyed a remarkable recovery.
