Albert Rhoton Lectures on Brain Anatomy

Pittsburgh, April 26, 2007 -- Albert Rhoton, Jr., MD, professor and chairman emeritus of neurosurgery at the University of Florida and often-described father of microneurosurgery, presented a lecture on "The Art and Beauty of the Brain," April 25 as part of the department's on-going visiting professor lecture series.

Dr. Rhoton is considered the founding figure in mapping brain anatomy. His 2003 textbook, "Cranial Anatomy and Surgical Approaches" was widely hailed as a surgical road map to the brain containing countless magnified photographs, drawings and computer-enhanced illustrations.

Dr. Rhoten used these photos and illustration to present a unique second lecture -- a 3D tour of the brain -- to residents, faculty and guests.

The department also used the occasion of Dr. Rhoten's visit to formerly rededicate the main conference room as the 'Peter J. Jannetta Conference Room.'

Dr. Jannetta, or 'PJ' as he is affectionately known to colleagues, served 26 years as department chairman beginning in 1971. More importantly, he developed a groundbreaking microneurosurgical procedure -- internationally known as 'the Jannetta Procedure' -- to treat microvascular decompression.

After the lectures and dedication, both Dr. Rhoton and Dr. Jannetta were honored with a special reception and dinner at the Fox Chapel Golf Club.
