2008 Stuart Rowe Society Honored Guest Lecturer

Patrick Joseph Kelly, MD, Biography

Patrick J. Kelly, MD is the Joseph Ransohoff Professor of Neurosurgery and former chairman of neurosurgery at New York University’s Langone Medical Center. He retired from NYU earlier this year.

Dr. Kelly did his undergraduate work at the University of Michigan and received his medical degree from the State University of New York. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1970, receiving the Navy Commendation Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation and the Vietnamese Presidential Medal while serving in Vietnam 1968-1969.

He then did a residency in neurosurgery at Northwestern and was on the faculty of the University of Texas Medical Branch. He was a professor and consultant in neurosurgery at the Mayo Medical School and Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, before moving to Manhattan in 1993.

Dr. Kelly was the AANS Schneider Lecturer in 1996 and 2002 and has received the Obrador medal (Spanish Neurosurgical Society, 1996), the Penfield Award (Canadian Neurosurgical Society, 1997), the Scoville Award from the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (1997) the l'Invitee' d'Honneur (French Neurosurgical Society, 2000), the Sir Peter Freyer Medal (Irish Surgical Society, 2001), the Olivecrona Medal (Karolinska Institute, 2001) and the Spiegel & Wycis medal from the World Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (2005).

He has authored/co-authored over 280 scientific articles/book chapters and two textbooks. He pioneered Computer-Assisted Stereotactic Neurosurgery and minimally invasive surgical techniques for the removal of brain tumors. He is on the editorial board of a number of journals including Neurosurgery, Surgical Neurology, ACTA Neurochirurgica, Neurosurgical Research and the Journal of Sterotactic and Functional Radiosurgery.

Dr. Kelly is president of the Brain Tumor Foundation and past president of the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and vice-president of the World Society for Stereoencephalotomy. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in the Boys and Girls Club of America, is listed in Marquis' Who's Who, Who's Who in Medicine, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and several "Best Doctors" lists including Good Housekkeping, Castle Connelly, U.S. News & World Report and New York Magazine. He was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in May 2008.

Dr. Kelly is an avid sailor, an active member of the New York Yacht Club and a trustee of the Boys and Girls Club of America
