Department Honors 2017 Chief Residents



Pittsburgh, June 17, 2017 -- A special black-tie graduation reception and dinner was held Saturday, June 17, at the Pittsburgh Golf Club honoring 2017 chief residents Chris Deibert, MD; Zach Tempel, MD; and Nate Zwagerman, MD, on their successful completion of the University of Pittsburgh’s seven-year neurological surgery residency program. The event was attended by more than 100 faculty members, colleagues, family and friends.

Upon graduation, Dr. Deibert is headed to Emory University in Atlanta; Dr Tempel is going to Mayfield Brain & Spine in Cincinnati; while Dr. Zwagerman will be serving as an assistant professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Annual teaching awards were also announced at the dinner. Dr. Tempel was selected as the best resident teacher as chosen by department faculty. Juan Carlos Fernandez-Miranda, MD, received the best faculty teaching award as selected by the residents.

With the graduation of Drs. Deibert, Tempel and Zwagermann, residents Gurpreet S. Gandhoke, MDPhilip Lee, MD, PhDDavid Panczykowski, MDGregory Weiner, MD; and Georgios Zenonos, MD, will serve as chiefs for the upcoming year. 

As the department honored its graduating residents, it also took the time to welcome four new residents: David T. Fernandes Cabral, MDZachary G. Gersey, MDJustiss A. Kallos, MD; and Roberta K. Sefcik, MD.
