Spinal cord tumor treatment is individualized and the treatment is highly specialized. We are a leading center for the treatment of patients with spinal cord tumors. We have a number of treatments available for patients with tumors that have arisen from the spinal column or metastasized (spread) to the spinal column. Treatments include external fractionated radiation treatments, internal radiation treatments (brachytherapy), surgical resection of tumor, spinal reconstruction, and chemotherapy.
We are one of the few centers which offer focused beam external radiation therapy for spinal tumors. This treatment directs radiation of the tumor while sparing the spinal cord and surrounding tissues. In-vitro chemotherapy can also be performed. This allows oncologists to determine which chemotherapeutic agents are most effective at treating the tumor.
Spinal angiography (examination of the blood supply to the spinal cord and tumor) and embolization (reducing the blood flow to the tumor) are also performed routinely. A full range of other treatment modalities and rehabilitation are available. |
