Pittsburgh, April 8, 2026 — Jeffrey Balzer, PhD, has been promoted to Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Balzer serves as Director of Clinical
Operations at the UPMC Center for Clinical Neurophysiology (CCN) and Director of the Cerebral Blood Flow Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Dr. Balzer's research interests span the refinement of language testing during awake craniotomy procedures, the utilization of signal processing analysis during cerebrovascular procedures, and the use of genetic biomarkers for the prediction of delayed cerebral ischemia in subarachnoid hemorrhage. He has also contributed to the study of exercise's effects on arterial stiffness and cerebral blood flow.
A lifelong University of Pittsburgh Panther, Dr. Balzer earned his BS (1984), MS (1989), and PhD (1994) in Behavioral Neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh, followed by a fellowship in Neurophysiology. He has held leadership roles nationally, including serving as Past President of the American Society of Neurophysiological Monitoring and Secretary/Treasurer of the American Board of Neurophysiologic Monitoring.
The CCN, where Dr. Balzer plays a central role, is the largest and busiest academic intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring program in the country, providing services across all UPMC hospitals.
