Pittsburgh, July 6, 2026 — Joseph Maroon, MD, clinical professor and vice chair of the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurological Surgery, served as visiting professor at the University of Michigan on July 1 and 2, 2026, delivering two lectures to faculty and residents.
Dr. Maroon presented two talks during the visit: "Success, Failure, and Creativity in Neurosurgery: The Importance of Kaizen and Serendipity" and "Spinal and Brain Injuries in Sports: Past, Present, and Future."
He spent his time meeting and counseling neurosurgical residents and touring the facilities at the University of Michigan, where pioneering neurosurgeons Richard Schneider, MD, Julian "Buzz" Hoff, MD, and Karin Muraszko, MD, shaped the field and influenced Dr. Maroon's career in sports medicine.
Dr. Maroon was hosted by resident Mark Zaki, MD, a University of Pittsburgh graduate, and by department chair Aditya Pandey, MD, a nationally recognized expert in the endovascular treatment of stroke and aneurysms and a pioneer in focused ultrasound of the brain.
