Maroon Receives Steeler Recognition Award

Joseph Maroon with Art Rooney, Jr.Pittsburgh, May 21, 2021Joseph Maroon, MD, Heindl Scholar in Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh and world-renown expert in sports medicine, has received the Pittsburgh Steeler service award for his more than three decades of work with the National Football League franchise as the team’s neurosurgeon.

In making the announcement, the Steelers paid tribute to Dr. Maroon for his “years of dedication and service to the team. Your contribution to the Steelers and sports medicine are unmatched by any neurosurgeon." 

Dr. Maroon's tenure with the team dates back to the Chuck Noll era when he helped develop the ImPACT concussion test—along with Mark Lovell, PhD—now used extensively by teams and organizations throughout the professional and amateur sports world. 

In addition to his work with the Steelers, Dr. Maroon also serves as chairman of the national scientific advisory board of the Chuck Noll Foundation which supports research into traumatic brain injuries in sports.
