Neurosurgery Team Awarded Grant from Pitt CMI

McDowell and Fernández-de ThomasPittsburgh, December 18, 2023 -- Michael McDowell, MD, assistant professor of neurological surgery at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and Ricardo Fernández-de Thomas, MD, chief resident with the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurological Surgery, have been awarded a $25,000 grant from University of Pittsburgh's Center for Medical Innovation (CMI) to help refine and commercialize a novel suction retractor called Malleous.

The award is part of the second round of CMI’s Early-Stage Medical Technology Research and Development 2023 pilot funding program.

Benjamin Leslie, a senior engineering student at the university, is also part of the Malleous team, involved in prototype design and participating in local pitch competitions.
