Nowicki, Alattar Take 2nd Place for Big Idea

Pittsburgh, April 15, 2022 -- Department residents Kamil Nowicki, MD, PhD, and Ali Alattar, MD, were members of a team, CAT-7, that took home second place in the University of Pittsburgh’s 2022 Randall Family Big Idea Competition, an iteration of a business pitch and idea development competition.

The CAT-7’s ‘big idea’ was a whole blood-based diagnostic test that can detect cerebral aneurysm formation, risk stratification, and risk of rupture at a lower cost and non-invasively compared to traditional imaging. The team, which also included Adi Mittal and Neha Adda, was awarded $15,000 for their idea.

The competition is part of the University of Pittsburgh's Big Idea Center for student innovation, established in 2018 with a seed gift of $2 million from Pitt alumnus and trustee Bob Randall. Mr. Randall and his family had previously created the Randall Family Big Idea Competition, which has been the region’s largest student pitch competition since its inception in 2008.
