Okonkwo Named Chair of Neurotrauma Section

David OkonkwoPittsburgh, April 20, 2020 -- David Okonkwo, MD, PhD, professor of neurological surgery and director of the Neurotrauma Clinical Trials Center at the University of Pittsburgh, has been named chair of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons Joint Section on Neurotrauma & Critical Care.

The AANS/CNS neurotrauma section serves to provide a forum for education and research on trauma and critical care of the nervous system and coordinates activities and programs relating to trauma, critical care and sports medicine for the parent organizations and other societies, committees and agencies. 

Dr. Okonkwo is a world-renown expert on traumatic injuries to the brain and spine as well as scoliosis and spinal deformity. His research endeavors involve developing biomarkers, advanced neuroimaging modalities and novel therapeutic interventions for brain and spinal cord injury. He is a principal investigator of a national clinical research network (TRACK-TBI) to advance our understanding and treatment of traumatic brain injury.
