Pittsburgh, May 7, 2013 -- Ian F. Pollack, MD, Walter E. Dandy Professor of Neurological Surgery at the the University of Pittsburgh and chief of neurosurgery at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, has been selected to serve as the editorial board chairman of the Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics.
Dr. Pollack, a world renown leader in brain tumor research as well as pediatric neurosurgery, has published almost 300 papers in refereed journals, numerous book chapters and invited papers, and has edited two books on childhood brain tumors. He is co-editor of the recently published book Principles and Practice of Pediatric Neurosurgery and an accompanying atlas Operative Techniques In Pediatric Neurosurgery.
Dr. Pollack has been recognized numerous times over the years for his work.
At their annual meeting in October of 2012, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons presented Dr. Pollack with the National Brain Tumor Society's Mahaley Clinical Research Award for his groundbreaking paper on peptide vaccines in children. The paper showed that peptide vaccines in children with gliomas -- the most common type of brain tumor -- not only were well-tolerated but also showed evidence of immunological responses.
Last year, he was elected to the Association of American Physicians (AAP), a prestigious nonprofit, professional organization founded in 1885 for the advancement of scientific and practical medicine. Along with department chairman Robert M. Friedlander, MD, he is one of only three neurosurgeons serving as members of this organization.
And in March of this year, Dr. Pollack was named recipient of the University of Pittsburgh William S. McEllroy Distinguished Resident Award, presented annually by the university's Medical Alumni Association to an outstanding non-alumnus who undertook residency training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
The Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics is part of the Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group (JNSPG), the publication arm of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. According to the journal's website, "the Journal of Neurosurgery is the most highly cited journal in neurosurgery, according to Thomson Reuters' Journal Citation Reports."
