Algattas, McDowell Win AANS Abstract Awards

Algattas and McDowellPittsburgh, March 2, 2022 -- Hanna Algattas, MD, chief resident with the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurological Surgery and Michael McDowell, MD, pediatric fellow at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and 2021 graduate of the department’s residency program, have both won abstract awards from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

Dr. Algattas won the Mizuho Minimally Invasive Brain Tumor Surgery Award for his abstract “Endoscopic Endonasal Resection of Rathke’s Cleft Cysts: A Single Institution Analysis of 113 Consecutive Patients.” Dr. McDowell won the Hydrocephalus Association Award, for his abstract “Diffuse Correlation Spectroscopy as an Accurate and Precise Option for Non-Invasive ICP Measurement."

Both will present their findings at the AANS annual meeting scheduled for April 29-May 2 in Philadelphia.

More than 1,400 abstracts were submitted in almost three dozen areas of study in this year's competition. Submissions were peer-reviewed and scored on scientific merit, originality and relevancy to the field. Award winners were carefully selected by the AANS Scientific Program Subcommittee for distinguished contributions to their field.
