Schulien Takes Top Rowe Presentation Award

Pittsburgh, October 19, 2023 -- PGY-3 resident Anthony Schulien, MD, took home the best resident presentation award at the 17th Annual Stuart Rowe Society Lectureship and Resident Research Day held October 18 at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurological Surgery.

Dr. Schulien's presentation, "Targeting Kv2.1 as a Neuroprotective Strategy Against Cerebral Ischemia," was one of 10 research lectures presented by department residents during the day honoring Stuart Niles Rowe, MD, widely considered the founding figure of neurosurgery training in the city of Pittsburgh. Niles was a strong advocate of thorough research and literature review in residency training. For winning the award, Dr. Schulien received a guest invitation to the 2024 American Academy of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting scheduled for Half Moon Bay, Calif., next October.

PGY-5 resident Hansen Deng, MD, received runner-up honors for his presentation, “Time to Follow Commands in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors with Favorable Recovery at 2 Years.”

The awards were chosen and presented by the lectureship’s honored guest, Issam A. Awad, MD, John Harper Seeley Professor of Neurological Surgery at The University of Chicago Medicine and director of the university’s Safadi Program of Excellence in Clinical and Translational Neuroscience. As honored guest lecturer, Dr. Awad also presented a talk on "Cavernous Angiomas as a Paradigm Disease: What They Tell Us About Brain Bleeding."

This Stuart Rowe Society Lectureship and Resident Research Day was established in 2005 as a tribute to Dr. Rowe who believed that neurosurgery training should not only teach exceptional technique, but also the critical clinical decision-making skills necessary to succeed. He preached the underlying need for independent research as a means for broadening clinical knowledge.
